Born in Havana (Cuba), Joel began studying ballet at the Escuela Elemental de la Habana and later continued his training at the Escuela Nacional de Ballet de la Habana (1993). In July 1994, he completed his ballet studies at the Real Conservatorio Profesional de Danza “Mariemna” in Madrid.
Later, Joel studied within the Alicia Alonso Chair at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, where he trained under the direction of professors Lázaro Carreño and Aurora Bosch.
In 1996, Joel joined the Ballet of the Community of Madrid, under the direction of Víctor Ullate, where he spent four years performing pieces choreographed by Víctor Ullate, Hans Van Mannen and Micha Van Hoecke, among others.
In September 2000, Joel joined the Compañia Nacional de Danza - España, under the direction of Nacho Duato (2000 - 2010) and José Carlos Martínez (2011 - 2015), where he remained until 2015.
Throughout his career, Joel has performed the lead roles in numerous choreographies within the repertoire of the Compañia Nacional de Danza - España, including pieces by prominent choreographers such as Jirí Kylián, Nacho Duato, W. Forsythe, Mats Ek, Ohad. Naharin, Angelin Preljocaj, Goyo Montero, among others.
In addition to his career as a dancer, Joel has a degree in Business Management and a Master's Degree in Cultural Management: Music, Theater and Dance from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Instituto Complutense de Ciencias Musicales). In September 2015, he was appointed Dance Adviser for the Community of Madrid, a position he currently holds.
